About HL programs

in Eindhoven/Brainport

The first heritage language (HL) schools that we know of in Eindhoven started in the 1980s, and since 2000 there has been a growing number of schools starting up to cater to the international community. The schools have different underlying forms, for example they might be organized as a foundation (stichting), a club/association (vereniging), or classes run by volunteers or freelance teachers.

Usually between twenty and forty lessons per school year are offered, and the most popular day for the language lessons is Saturday. The average age range of students is between four and twelve (primary school age), with a few schools offering classes for very young children, for secondary school students, or for adults. There is great variation in how many hours per month the students meet, how much the lessons cost, whether or not teachers are compensated, how much support is received from the home country, and how many cultural activities are organized in addition to the language lessons. As for size, the smallest heritage language schools in Eindhoven have approximately twenty children and the largest schools have several hundred.

The Bulgarian School in Eindhoven is a place where children with Bulgarian origin can learn to read, write and communicate in this beautiful rich European language while having fun, making friends and discovering the world. We believe that children can become more confident and have more colourful, memorable childhood experiences when they know and appreciate their Bulgarian cultural heritage, regardless of where in the world they live and grow up. This is the mission of our school. For children aged 3-13, our school offers educational activities which promote literacy in Bulgarian and are aligned with the official curriculum developed specifically for Bulgarian schools abroad (on the subject "Bulgarian language and literature"). Depending on age and language proficiency, children can attend the classes corresponding to year 1 up to year 7 (for public Bulgarian schools). We also have a separate kindergarten and a pre-school group. Lessons take place on Saturdays from 14:30 to 18:00 hrs (2 or 3 Saturdays per month between September and July). Up-to-date class schedule can be found on the school website. Other activities / additional information The school also functions as an informal centre of the Bulgarian community in the area, creating many opportunities for families to connect and spend time together attending school events or celebrating Bulgarian traditions and holidays.

Guests and participants of our activities have access to an extensive library offering books to readers of all ages. Our Café hosts regular team meetings, board meetings, partner talks, individual training and coaching sessions. We participate in Berlin projects and form partnerships with local libraries, organisations or institutions, e.g. Lingua Pankow or BEFaN network.

25 lessons per school year from September to May, on Wednesday afternoons Other activities/additional information Once a year family activity “Hoy hablamos Español” “De Carrousel” is an educational project located in Eindhoven and is managed by the CLO (Latin American Orientation Centre, Centro Latinoamericano de Orientación). The ”De Carrousel” project started back in 2006 to support Latin American migrants with their children's bilingual education. It also seeks to strengthen children's right to maintain and develop their parents'; native languages. Fontys University and Gerona University (Universidad de Gerona, in Spain) made the “De Carrousel” project possible. The name of the project itself was suggested by interns from the latter university as a reference to the iconic carousel in the Market Square in the centre of Eindhoven. The “De Carrousel” project offers Spanish lessons to children from ages 4 to 11 every Wednesday from 14.00 to 15.00. Its main goal is to teach the Spanish language starting at a young age with a playful and systematic approach. This is achieved by implementing methodology which is then tailored to the child's own level. For more information contact us!
