A year ago on International Mother Language Day, we launched the Global Call to Action for Heritage Language Education to push for better support for heritage language learning. To keep the momentum going, we are happy to announce that the checklist that accompanies the Global Call to Action (introduced in English in September 2024) is now available in Dutch, German, and Icelandic. These translations of the checklist make it easier for stakeholders in different regions of the world to use this simple advocacy tool to promote heritage language education in their communities.

Want to participate in the Global Call?

  • First, the number one tip to help has always been: be aware of the heritage language programs operating in your region. Knowing which ones exist is the first step in acknowledging and supporting their work.

  • Think you can do even more than that? Use the checklist for yourself to see what else you can commit to!

  • Want to make sure others will make some commitments? Use our advocacy tools! Download the checklist in your preferred language and share it with mainstream schools, policymakers, and businesses looking for ways to be socially responsible.

Made possible by . . .

The translations of the checklist were made possible through a joint effort of members of the HL Global Think Tank: Dr. Miglena Hristozova of the Initiative für Mehrsprachigkeit und interkulturelle Bildung (IMIB) in Germany, Dr. Renata Emilsson Peskova of the Móðurmál – the Association on Bilingualism in Reykjavik, and Dr. Gisi Cannizzaro of HLE Network, with assistance from Gemma Hodgson and Kristel Doreleijers.

Go to the main checklist page to find the English, Dutch, German, and Icelandic versions available for download.
